Volunteers are the reliable backbone of the Ukrainian front

When global assistance from all-Ukrainian funds is too slow, volunteers of the city and regions can help. In the first days of the war, it was difficult to organize help, not clear where to run and what to do. Then, I found local groups of volunteers in the Goloseevsky district. The chat is organized and structured: special people are responsible for logistics, finance and other areas. This group deals with clothing, food, bulletproof vests and much more. Volunteers try to be universal and solve any issues. I will write about those with whom I personally worked this week.

In peaceful times Dima is an event manager and a sports volunteer. He is from the Dnipro region and worries about his mother and younger brother, who can see the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant from their window. He does not understand why the United States is not helping to protect Ukrainian airspace.

Dima, organizer of volunteers in the Goloseevsky district:

“I moved to Kyiv in 2015, and since 2017, I began to volunteer at sporting events. At the third marathon, I already supervised 1000 volunteers and worked with the police and firefighters at the site. I started a volunteer group together with a friend, Anya. Immediately, there were requests for help from people hiding in the subway. We found the contacts of doctors and solved the issue of lack of medicine in the VDNG metro station in half a day. Then, we helped with food in the shelter on the Demiivska metro station. Volunteers can do anything. Make a bomb shelter in a bar. A cocktail factory that can organize 1000 cocktails per day and already shipped 10,000 cocktails! There was a request for 1000 ampoules of adrenaline - this order was transferred to the enterprise.

The only thing we could not deliver was weapons for the Territorial Defence - this was not part of our profile. We recently delivered a car of medicines, products and detergents for people who are in the shelter of the VDNG metro. In the Ohmadet Oncology Center, we often buy painkillers, food and medicine for children with cancer. Irpin was bombed and they were looking for a generator for surgery in the hospital – we found it in 20 minutes and sent it to the hospital. Our technical manager decided to supply generators from his company to those in need for free.

People help with things, money, information attacks - everything. A group of 250,000 hackers from around the world, of which I am a member, carried out DDoS attacks on the website of the Russian Ministry of Defenсe and “put it down” in 15 minutes. The world leader in protecting websites from such attacks has left Russia. Now, it's even easier. This is how we live and work.”

Alena is also a volunteer in this group. I met her while purchasing medicines for city hospitals. Pharmacies are mostly closed, there are few medicines available. On that day, I found what I needed at the 7th pharmacy, walked 5 kilometres and spent 3 hours. On another day, I helped financially, and it took 3 minutes - they sent me photos and receipts of medicines for the hospital, and I transferred the money.

I am a teacher of chemistry, biology and physical education at school. I also teach dance. During the Orange Revolution in 2004, I was a student. We went to peaceful demonstrations. During the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, humanitarian aid was collected at the school for Maydan volunteers. At the same time, volunteer assistance to ATO soldiers was born. Then, in schools, food was prepared, postcards were sent out, nets were woven.

Alena, school teacher, volunteer:
“In the first days of the war, it was difficult and incomprehensible, but then the question, “How can I help?” came. There are a lot of groups in different messengers, in which it is easy to find tasks for yourself. I realized that I have legs and a great desire to do something. And I went to a group of volunteers in the Golosiivsky district.

From the current tasks, the most difficult was to find bulletproof vests. The army is better prepared, but the Territorial Defence and volunteer battalions need uniforms, clothing and food. Bulletproof vests, mats, walkie-talkies, medicines, food - every time this is a new list of needs from disposable tableware to chapstick. Recently, we sent a stove with a gas cylinder. Our small group of volunteers has a character. We try to be transparent, we take photos and receipts of purchases in order to report to donors. Sometimes, it's hard to find medicine, or it's hard morally, but we hold on! And we are grateful for the support of Europe.

Our group of volunteers is young; it’s only been 10 days since the beginning of the war, but we are already expanding. We are looking for wholesale suppliers, we are developing a logistics department on both banks of the Dnieper - for 10 days of work, this is an excellent result. We are waiting for deliveries from Poland. We will deliver from Lviv, we will sort, protect. Friends also raise funds to help the  Territorial Defense. This is such a wonderful impulse in the country - it makes your soul rejoice. This is probably the only plus of this war. Everyone is doing their part !"

In addition to the district volunteers, I constantly contact the guys from the tourist club. Instead of meetings with tea and a guitar or sports competitions, we are now organizing help for the city. For the second day, representatives of Kyiv tourist clubs have been helping the administration of the Kyiv railway station with window protection. A beautiful station with high stained glass windows under the threat of bombing. Volunteers seal the windows so that after the explosion, the glass does not crumble on the people inside. Tourist clubs and professional industrial climbers independently raised funds for the necessary materials. Since it was ineffective to seal the huge windows with adhesive tape, they decided to hang them with a special protective mesh. And for this, they bought almost 1 square kilometre of protective nets.

Bogdan, representative of the Globus tourist club, teacher:
“I am a member of the Globus tourist club, we decided to help at our station. On the first day, there were not enough materials for work, we raised funds and organized a car, and the next day, we started to work. Today, I went to the store and picked up 900 m2 of mesh. My car has never been this big. Such rolls are from 4 to 6 meters wide, and the stained-glass windows themselves consist of elements 4 meters wide. We were lucky that we did not need to sew these grids together.

Today, industrial climbers punched holes in the roof of the station to organize the lifting of nets. Climbing the stained-glass windows and technical floors of the station is interesting. There are spiral steps, a passage through the roof. We hung 4 ropes on both of the largest stained-glass windows on the south and north sides of the central station. I also laid out the grid under the stained-glass window today, so that it would be ready for hanging tomorrow. We warned people and placed the chips so that people would not go there.

I went to the medical centre because a woman lost consciousness. They helped her right away. Volunteers are active, and there are a lot of them. Trucks with food and medicine are constantly loaded and unloaded. I even saw packs of pizzas that were handed out to people.”

In addition to protective nets for windows, which can be bought, in Ukraine for 8 years, protective nets for military equipment and shelters have been constantly woven by hand. Woven from special materials and pieces of fabric, they are light and durable. Lyudmila and her friends created a group of volunteers "Physicists-Lyrics" on the basis of the Institute of Theoretical Physics back in 2014 during the Maydan. The day before the start of the war, they were going to start weaving a new order together that came in from the military from the Donbas - 90 protective nets measuring 5 by 8 meters. But they never got together, because the war began; and it became difficult to get together.

Lyudmila, Chief Engineer of the Institute:
“We don’t weave protective nets now because we can’t get there. I'm helping the Territorial Defence. I supply warm clothes, socks and sleeping bags through long-standing volunteer connections. Yesterday, I bought a universal first aid kit for 15,000 uah. I’m currently trying to get help from Warsaw and Spain. I established logistics to transport them from the border. We are waiting for deliveries of tactical medicine”.

Many people from Kyiv remained in the city and help in this war. Some can do a lot, some a little, but everyone's contribution is important. The motto of Alena's group of small good deeds is: "It is better to do a small good deed than to wait for a big feat." The joy of help and gratitude lifts the spirit of the volunteers.

Волонтеры –  надежный тыл украинского фронта

Украинцы научились быстро организовываться в группы взаимной помощи и налаживать связи со времен Майдана 2014 года . Задачи решаются на локальном уровне: накормить 200 бойцов, купить лекарств в госпиталь, обезопасить окна общественного здания и другие. Те места, где глобальная помощь от всеукраинских фондов запаздывает, перекрывают наши волонтеры города и районов. Первые дни было сложно организоваться для помощи, было непонятно куда бежать и что делать. Потом нашла локальную группу волонтеров Голосеевского района. Чат организован и структурирован: отдельные люди отвечают за логистику, финансы и другие сферы. Эта группа занимается одеждой, едой, бронежилетами и много чем еще. Волонтеры пытаются быть универсальными и решать любые вопросы. Напишу о тех, с кем работала лично в эту неделю.

 В мирное время Дима - event manager и спортивный волонтер. Он родом из Днепровской области. Переживает за маму и младшего брата, у которых Запорожскую атомную станцию станцию из окна видно. Не понимает почему США тянут с  защитой неба в Украине.

Дима, организатор группы волонтеров Голосеевского района:
«В Киев переехал в 2015, а с 2017 начал волонтерить на спортивных мероприятиях. На третьем марафоне я уже курировал 1000 волонтеров, работал с полицией и пожарными на участке.

Создали эту группу вдвоем с подругой Аней. Сразу поступали запросы помощи, например людям, прячущимся в метро. Нашли контакты медиков и закрыли вопрос по лекарствам на метро Вднх за полдня. Потом помогали с едой в убежище на метро Демеевская. Волонтеры могут почти все. Бомбоубежище в баре. Завод по производству коктейлей, который может в день 1000 коктейлей организовать. Уже отгрузили 10 000 коктейлей!  Был запрос на 1000 ампул адреналина - его передали этот заказ на предприятие.

Не смогли  только   доставить оружие для Территориальной обороны – не наш профиль. Недавно целый багажник машины лекарств, продуктов, моющих средств для людей, находящихся в убежище метро Вднх доставили.

В онкоцентр Охмадет, часто покупаем обезболивающее, питание, лекарства для детей, больных раком. Также купили им обогреватели. Ирпинь  разбомбили и в больницу искали генератор в хирургию - нашли за 20 минут и отправили в больницу. Наш  технический менеджер бесплатно решил поставлять генераторы со своей фирмы нуждающимся.

Люди помогают вещами, деньгами, информационными атаками - всем. Группа хакеров со всего мира из 250 000 человек, в которой я состою, провела DDoS атаки сайт министерства обороны России и «положила его» за 15 минут. Мировой лидер защиты сайтов от таких атак ушел из России, теперь еще легче. Вот так живем, работаем.»

С Аленой познакомилась во время закупки лекарств в городские больницы. Аптек закрыты, в наличии мало медикаментов. В тот день я нашла необходимое в 7й по счету аптеке, прошла 5 километров и потратила 3 часа. В другой день помогала финансово и это заняло 3 минуты – мне прислали фотографии и чеки лекарств для больницы, я перевела деньги.

 Алена - учитель химии, биологии и физкультуры в школе. Еще и танцы преподает. Во время Оранжевой революции в 2004 ходила на мирные демонстрации. Во время Революции Достоинства в 2014 собирала гуманитарную помощь в школе для волонтеров Майдана. Тогда же зародилась волонтерская помощь воинам АТО. В школах страны заготавливали еду, рассылали открытки, плели сетки.

Алена, школьный учитель, волонтер:

«В первые дни войны было сложно и непонятно, но потом пришел вопрос «Чем я могу помочь?». Есть куча групп в разных мессенджерах, в которых легко найти для себя решаемые задачи. Поняла, что у меня есть ноги и огромное желание что-то делать. И пошла в группу волонтеров Голосеевского района.

Из текущих задач самой сложной было найти бронежилеты. Армия лучше подготовлена, но Территориальная оборона и добровольческие батальоны нуждаются  в обмундировании, одежде, питании. Бронежилеты, карематы, рации, лекарства, еда - каждый раз это новый список потребностей от одноразовой посуды до гигиенической помады. Недавно даже отправляли плиту с газовым баллоном. Такие задания мы называем «Задания со звездочкой». Наша небольшая группа волонтеров с характером. Стараемся быть прозрачными, делаем фотографии и чеки покупок, чтобы отчитываться перед донорами. Иногда тяжело найти медикаменты или тяжело морально, но мы держимся,! И благодарны поддержку Европе.

Наша группа волонтеров молодая, только 10 дней с начала войны, но уже расширяемся. Ищем оптовых поставщиков, разрабатываем отделение логистики по обоим берегам Днепра – для 10 дней работы это отличный результат. Ждем поставки из Польши. Доставим из Львова, будем сортировать, охранять. Друзья тоже собирают средства на помощь Тро. Это такой замечательный порыв в стране – душа радуется. Это наверное единственный плюс этой войны. Все люди стараются!»

Кроме волонтеров района я постоянно связываюсь с ребятами из туристического клуба. Вместо встреч с чаем и гитарой или спортивных соревнований сейчас организовываем помощь городу. Уже второй день представители турклубов Киева помогают администрации Киевского вокзала с защитой окон. Красивый вокзал с высокими витражными окнами под угрозой бомбардировок.  Заклеивают окна, чтобы после взрыва стекло не рассыпалось на людей внутри. Турклуб Глобус, другие турклубы и профессиональные промышленные альпинисты откликнулись на пост администрации вокзала, самостоятельно собрали средства для необходимых материалов. Так как заклеивать огромные окна скотчем было неэффективно, решили завесить их специальной защитной сеткой. А для этого купили почти 1 квадратный километр защитных сеток.

Богдан, представитель турклуба Глобус, преподаватель:
«Я член турклуба Глобус, решили помочь нашему вокзалу. В первый день не хватало материалов для работы, собрали средства и организовали машину, и на другой день уже начали работу. Сегодня ездил в магазин и забирал 900 м2 сетки. Моя машина никогда не была такой вместительной.  В ширину такие рулоны от 4 до 6 метров, и сами витражи состоят из элементов по 4 метра шириной. Нам повело, что не придется сшивать эти сетки между собой.

Сегодня промальпинисты пробили в крыше вокзала дырки, чтобы сделать страховку и организовать подъем сеток. Основная работа по развешиванию сеток у нас будет завтра. Подниматься на витражи и технические этажи вокзала интересно. Там винтовые ступеньки, проход через крышу. Повесили по 4 веревки на оба самых больших витражных окна с южной и северной стороны центрального вокзала. Также сегодня разложил сетку под витражом, чтобы она была готова к завтрашнему развешиванию. Мы предупредили людей и расставили фишки, чтобы люди туда не ходили.

Еще сегодня обратился в медицинский пункт, потому что женщина потеряла сознание. Ей сразу помогли. Волонтеры работают  активно и их очень много. Постоянно загружают и выгружают фуры с едой и медикаментами. Даже видел пачки с пиццами, которые раздают людям.»

Кроме защитных сеток на окна, которые можно купить, в Украине уже 8 лет постоянно плетут вручную защитные сетки для военной техники и укрытий. Сплетенные из специальных материалов и кусков ткани они легкие и долговечные. Людмила и ее друзья создали группу волонтеров «Физики-лирики» на базе Института теоретической физики еще в 2014 году во время Майдана. За день до начала войны они собирались начать плести вместе новый заказ от военных с Донбасса – 90 защитных сетей размером 5 на 8 метров. Но так и не собрались, потому что началась война и собираться стало сложно.

Людмила, Главный инженер института:
«Сейчас защитные сетки не плетем, потому что не можем доехать. Я помогаю Территориальной обороне. Снабжаю через давние волонтерские связи теплой одеждой, носками, спальниками. Вчера купила аптечку универсальную на 15 тысяч. Пытаюсь получить помощь из Варшавы и Испании. Наладила логистику, чтобы убрать из границы. Ждем поставок по тактической медицине».

Многие Киевляне остались в городе и помогают в этой войне. Кто-то может сделать много, кто-то чуть-чуть, но вклад каждого важен. Девиз группы маленьких добрый дел Алены: «Лучше сделать маленькое доброе дело, чем ждать большой подвиг». Радость от помощи и благодарность поднимает дух тех, кто в тылу.
