Nirgendwo gibt es eine größere biologische Vielfalt als im Amazonas-Urwald. Auch als Co2-Speicher ist er für die Erde unverzichtbar. Doch der tropische Lebensraum ist bedroht. Hauptgegner: Mensch. Vor allem Sojaanbau und Viehzucht in industriellem Maßstab sind ein einträgliches Geschäft.

Dafür werden jedes Jahr riesige Flächen gerodet. Zwar hatte sich die jährliche Entwaldung seit 2004 zeitweise verringert, da die Politik den Wald stärker schützen wollte. Doch dann kam die Präsidentschaft Jair Bolsonaros. Der brasilianische Regierungschef glaubt nicht an den Klimawandel und sieht im Amazonas vor allem ungenutzte Wirtschaftsfläche. Weniger Umweltschutz, mehr Rodungen - so sein Programm. Die Entwaltungsrate hat seit seiner Amtsübernahme 2019 immer neue Rekordwerte erreicht. Mittel zum Umweltschutz hat er hingegen gestrichen und leitende Mitarbeitende aus Umwelt- und Forschungsbehörden, die seinen Kurs kritisieren, entlassen.

Wie man mit etwas Zeit und Handarbeit einen Wald ohne Geld und ohne eigenes Grundstück pflanzt – legal oder illegal, aber auf jeden Fall zu Recht!

“Most people who I know left or are about to leave the country“

Last Thursday the KATAPULT had the chance to speak to a young woman in Russia about the situation inside the country. Originally it was planned as a video-interview. However the newest regulations in Russia which suppress the freedom of press and punish the spreading of information against the government are punishable with  a prison sentence of up to 15 years. 14 of the 15 are women. Four are currently fleeing West. Some are in calmer regions of Ukraine, while some are in violent war zones.
