Kriegsverbrecher zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt

Mladic wurde vor dem Kriegsgerichtshof in Den Haag zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt: Für den Völkermord in Srebrenica und weitere Kriegsverbrechen, wie etwa der Vertreibung der Bosniak:innen und Kroat:innen aus verschiedenen Gebieten in Bosnien Herzegowina. Das Urteil selbst wurde schon 2017 verhängt, und jetzt in letzter Instanz bestätigt. Der mittlerweile 78-jährige Kriegsverbrecher wird sein restliches Leben hinter Gittern verbringen.

Einmal Völkermord, sechsmal nicht

In Mladics Heimatland sorgt das Urteil für kontroverse Diskussionen. Einige bosnische Serb:innen sprechen von politischer Willkür und werfen dem Haager Tribunal Parteilichkeit vor. Und in Teilen Serbiens wird Mladic immer noch als Kriegsheld verehrt und der Völkermord in Srebrenica schlicht geleugnet.

“Most people who I know left or are about to leave the country“

Last Thursday the KATAPULT had the chance to speak to a young woman in Russia about the situation inside the country. Originally it was planned as a video-interview. However the newest regulations in Russia which suppress the freedom of press and punish the spreading of information against the government are punishable with  a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
