Und für sie ist das auch kein Schummeln. Fragt man dort jemanden, der dem europäischen Verständnis nach 17 Jahre alt ist, nach dem Alter, lautet die Antwort 18 oder sogar 19. Das liegt aber nicht etwa daran, dass die Menschen ihre Rente kaum erwarten können. Sie zählen ihr Lebensalter einfach anders. Kinder sind bei ihrer Geburt schon ein Jahr alt. Hinzu kommt, dass das nächste Lebensjahr nicht an dem Tag beginnt, an dem sich die Geburt jährt, sondern am Neujahrstag – des chinesischen Jahres. Nach dieser Zählweise kann es also sein, dass jemand in Ostasien als zwei Jahre älter gilt als nach westlicher Zählweise. In China, Japan und Vietnam stirbt die traditionelle Altersberechnung langsam aus, in Korea und Taiwan hingegen wird sie im Alltag häufig verwendet.

“Most people who I know left or are about to leave the country“

Last Thursday the KATAPULT had the chance to speak to a young woman in Russia about the situation inside the country. Originally it was planned as a video-interview. However the newest regulations in Russia which suppress the freedom of press and punish the spreading of information against the government are punishable with  a prison sentence of up to 15 years. That’s why the interview will now be published as completely anonymized text. The photos were sent by the interviewee. Her name and hometown has been verified by KATAPULT.

14 of the 15 are women. Four are currently fleeing West. Some are in calmer regions of Ukraine, while some are in violent war zones.
